Streaming Loudness Targets: A Practical Comparison

Compare published loudness guidance, separate playback normalization from delivery limits, and check a stereo master before streaming release.

Why one master plays at different levels

A playback setting can change how loud a track sounds without changing the delivered master. Before comparing two services, check normalization, volume mode and the playback device. Turning one player up is not evidence that its upload specification is different.

There is no single mandatory LUFS target for all streaming music. A normalization reference, a mastering recommendation and an ingestion limit answer different questions. Record which one a number represents before using it as a pass/fail threshold.

What the platforms actually publish

Spotify Normal playback targets −14 LUFS; Loud is −11 and Quiet is −19. Spotify recommends below −1 dBTP, or below −2 dBTP for masters louder than −14 LUFS. Treat the chosen playback mode and mastering guidance separately. Positive gain is limited by available headroom.
Apple Music stereo Sound Check matches playback loudness. Apple’s mastering brief leaves loudness to creative judgment and recommends at least 1 dB of headroom. A commonly quoted −16 LUFS reference is not a required stereo delivery target in that brief.
YouTube Its official help describes Stable volume, which is disabled for YouTube Music and official music videos. It does not specify a universal music-delivery LUFS ceiling there. Do not turn an observed playback value into an upload requirement.
Amazon Music A current official stereo LUFS/true-peak specification was not verified for this guide. Get the destination’s current delivery brief from your distributor.
TIDAL A current official fixed LUFS/true-peak specification was not verified for this guide. Check the actual app settings and delivery brief; do not assume every client behaves identically.

A useful comparison on your own master

Keep one untouched export. Measure the entire programme and note its integrated loudness and maximum true peak. Then compare a level-matched version with your reference track. Listen for changes in transient shape, vocal placement and low-end movement before adjusting the limiter.

For example, a −10 LUFS master needs approximately 4 dB of attenuation to reach a −14 LUFS playback reference. That arithmetic predicts gain, not artistic quality. Heavy limiting may be part of the intended sound; normalization does not reverse that processing.

Before you deliver

  1. Name the destination and save its current requirements alongside the session.
  2. Measure the final export from start to finish, with the meter reset.
  3. Check true peak separately from sample peak and audition a representative encoded version.
  4. Record the meter, measurement mode and file revision so another engineer can reproduce the result.
  5. Recheck any replacement export, even if only the fade changed.
